“When you are at Bonneville you don't have time to be nice to your equipment or worry about its functionality.  We abused the four speed overdrive transmission for over ten runs at top speed and it performed flawlessly.”

"I have done many things to 'improve' the bike in the 30 years I have owned it, but nothing has had such a positive effect on the rideability."

“I have ridden my 1948 Chief with a Chief Overdrive Transmission for almost a year now. It is the simplest solution to the lack of speed, over-revving of the engine and limited performance of any Indian Chiefs on the road today. I am currently building a 1937 Chief and plan on installing a Chief Overdrive Transmission in it. At this point I have ridden in excess of 8000 miles on my 1948 Chief (as of May 2001) with the overdrive transmission. I have had no problems and maintenance is a breeze. I cannot imagine building a daily rider Chief without a Chief Overdrive Transmission in it. Don’t just ride, Overdrive.”

Martin e-mailed us that he completed a 6000 km (3600 miles) tour through the Swiss Alps with his Chief & Sidecar, an excellent test for the transmission.

"All I can say is WOW !!! The difference between the stock crash box and your transmission is incredible. Anyone REALLY serious about riding their Chief is fooling themselves by NOT employing this unit.

I was facing rebuild of my stock box (for the SECOND time in less than 2000 miles !!!) Several teeth literally shattered on 1st and 2nd gear. Both the cluster and shifter gear were junk. The cost of having this unit re-rebuilt ( by someone who REALLY knows how ) was breath-taking. Unfortunately, when done, it would still be the same old "the gear I need ain't there" crash box with the same trash re-pro gears in it.

When I started considering your 4-speed unit, my first reaction was "Oh Jeez, more money !!!" Then I thought about how stupid it would be to dump another load of cash into another "overhaul" for what I would net. Suddenly, your transmission started looking to be the better investment.

Once I rode my bike with your trans. installed, all the anguish over cost evaporated !!! It made such an unbelievable difference in the functionality of the bike that you virtually have to try it and see for yourself. Riding through hills and winding roads is enjoyable and highway cruising is far better. Even purists can't complain ( too much ) since the box looks so much like a stock unit.

I'm really looking forward to putting some serious miles on the Chief this summer. It'll be nice to know I won't be having to flush chipped gear pieces out every 250 miles!!  Thanks ! Jeff Pearson

I LOVE the overdrive. It did several things for the bike. One, no more gear grinding regardless of the clutch you use. Two, it allowed me to use a smaller drive sprocket for greatly enhanced acceleration. Three, it gave a higher top end even with the smaller sprocket that lets the motor turn the same rpm at 70 that it did at 55 before. The bottom line is it gives much more flexibility to operate in today’s traffic and keep up on the highway without having the top end wear chiefs are famous for if run at sustained high speeds. You’ll never go back. Now if we could only do this for Sport Scouts and Fours!
